Carpenter Glove

By

One of the things that few carpenters ever bother to buy are carpenter gloves. These glvoes offer a lot of great advantages but they also have their disadvantages. The main reason you would want to wear carpenter gloves is to keep yourself warm. Where I live it can be cold for a large part of the year-even well into the usual seasons in which people get outside and build things. One of the last things you want when you are putting up siding or roofing hands that are completely numb.

When most people first hear about carpenter gloves they immediately wonder if they will be able to still hold things. Gloves don't exactly give you the best finger dexterity. It is often said that the only thing you can do with gloves on is pee your pants. Most of the companies that have designed high quality carpenter gloves have taken this into account and have devised a very simple fix. Your pointer finger and middle finger are both free on most types of carpenter glove. This allows you to easily grip things like nails and keeps you from accidentally pulling the trigger on a nail gun.

Finding carpenter gloves should be fairly easy. A lot of stores like Home Depot or your local home improvement stores. Depending on the store there can be either a large or small selection but either way you should be able to find a pair that fit your comfortably. You should also make sure that the pair you get, aside from having the two free fingers, should have some kind of grippy material on the palm to help you hold onto a hammer or other tool. A lot have types of leather, which in my experience, can become smooth in the right conditions and it will become a lot harder to hold onto your tools. Instead you should look for the kind that have a rubber-like material on the palm. I can only describe the material as feeling like the soul on a new pair of shoes.

The other thing you should remember before buying a pair of carpenter gloves is that you cannot use them in a shop with power tools no matter how tightly they fit. I have seen people use drill presses with gloves and it will BARELY catch some part of the glove and suck them in. I have never seen it get really ugly but I have very little doubt that it can get downright destructive. Make sure you always take your gloves off before working in the shop. It is also important that the gloves are neither too tight or too loose. When working on just about every part of the job you don't want your fingers to lose any of their dexterity at all and you want the gloves to fit tight enough that they don't get in the way.
