Milk Glass Lamp Shade

Few pieces of home furnishings today have the same kind of appeal that the vintage ones had. I'm not talking about beanbag couches and shag carpets and other completely and utterly silly trends, I mean the things that had class in days gone by. Today everything is just a copy of something else, there is nothing original about the couch I'm sitting on right now. Infact it has a pretty boring print on it, it doesn't look very interesting, and the design quality is pretty poor. Its really like all of the things we put in our homes today. One of my favorite vintage furnishings is the milk glass lamp shade.

If you are looking for a milk glass lamp shade you are probably completely out of luck. Every company that makes lamps today doesn't make anything that looks even remotely like these pieces of history. Very few stores, especially the kind we come across on a day to day basis, carry vintage furnishings of any kind so you will be hard pressed to find anything like this locally. You can hope that you might walk into a antique shop and see something, but its unlikely.

I won't be totally doom and gloom about it, there is one option-you can look online. The internet is an incredible place to look for just about anything you cannot find locally. In time I think we will all stop shopping locally except for things like food. Someday we might even order our groceries online and just drive down and pick them up. The internet has many different advantages-especially when we are looking for something like milk glass lamp shades.

Online stores have the ability to be niche specific and not just sell things with a really broad appeal. This allows them to carry really off beat things. Another plus of the internet age is outsourcing. Everyone can have a product created in a factory off shore at a very low price so they can sell it online. I am willing to bet there are a few stores online which are now carrying newly made milk glass lamp shades(and if there isn't there might be a great niche for you to make a store in ;)).

Otherwise, you can look on places such as ebay and craigslist in order to find the type of lamp shade you are looking for. These are great places where people sell or give away(on craigslist) things they don't need anymore.

I cannot even tell you how many times having the internet as a resource has made the difference between finding the exact piece of decor that I want or having to settle for something close. Nice hub!

Sourcing original and unique items also possible with a visit to a good Architectural Salvage and Reclamation yard or showroom. I buy in lots of original items as the quality and design is great. And you get to be sustainable and re-use into the bargain. Ikea has it's place, but it's lovely not to have the same as everyone else in your home!!
